6a00d8341c630a53ef01287764b34c970c-400wi“ALICE IN WONDERLAND”: 29 DAYS

Are you ready for a trip down the rabbit hole? Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and Disney are adding a strange new chapter to the Lewis Carroll classic with “Alice in Wonderland,” a film that presents a young woman who finds herself in the world of the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and the Red Queen. She is welcomed as a returning visitor — but is she in fact the same Alice who roamed the trippy realm as a child? Time will tell. Here at the Hero Complex we’re counting down to the film’s March 5 release with daily coverage. Today it’s a conversation with Mia Wasikowska, the 20-year-old Aussie newcomer who plays the title role.

Geoff Boucher: The film is called “Alice in Wonderland,” but really this is neither a pure adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s writings nor a remake of previous films. This is a whole new story, correct?

Mia Wasikowska: It’s a completely different and new story, but it has a lot of the same characters in it. It has the same feel of the original stories, but it’s really fun to explore a story that goes further and imagines what all these characters would be like several years down the tracks. Alice doesn’t have a recollection of her first visit there. She’s gone back and is discovering this world and finding herself again in this place that she doesn’t even remember.

‘Alice in Wonderland’ Moviefone Exclusive: How Tim Burton’s Characters Progress
Posted by Cam • No Comments »

Moviefone have posted a great article about the progress of the character creation for “Alice In Wonderland”.

“There is a place, like no place on Earth…”

Given the deliciously weird trailer for Tim Burton’s upcoming twist on ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ it’s obvious that the eccentric filmmaker has created some characters, like no characters on Earth, as well.

And since waiting for the DVD to see how the filmmaker goes about his FX craftwork is soooo 2001, we’re thrilled to present an exclusive glimpse at the progression of The Tweedles, The Dodo, The White Rabbit and The Dormouse.

For those unschooled in ‘Alice’ lore, the Tweedles, aka Tweedledee and Tweedledum, are the fellows who resemble twin Mini-Me’s in fat suits (and in the film are both played by one actor, Matt Lucas), and The Dodo’s is the bird (fun fact: named after author Lewis Carroll, born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson).

In 1984, Paul Reubens was looking for a director. The film in development was Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985), and Reubens, who had been working on the perversely juvenile conceptual-art project for about 15 years, was desperate to find someone he could trust to direct it with style. So, as people in Los Angeles do, he asked around at a party. One of the guests had just seen Frankenweenie—Tim Burton’s 1984 live-action short about a dog that is brought back to life. Burton had no previous experience as a feature-film director, but the two men immediately bonded. Only 25 at the time, Burton got the job, and the pair watched as their strange but imaginative film earned more than $40 million at the box office.

Mia Wasikowska: O Sole Mia
Posted by Cam • 2 Comments »

Here’s an article about Mia Wasikowska that was recently posted on W Magazine.

Growing up, Mia Wasikowska knew the story of Alice in Wonderland. But unlike most children, she was best acquainted with the version by experimental Czech director Jan Svankmajer, Alice. The macabre 1988 movie, which costars a young girl and a taxidermied rabbit, made a deep impression on Wasikowska and her siblings when their mother popped it into the VCR. “We used to be kind of disturbed by it,” recalls the 20-year-old Australian actress, best known Stateside for her role on HBO’s In Treatment. “But we could never walk away, because it was so fascinating and odd.”

Those same words could also describe the films of director Tim Burton, whose upcoming version of Lewis Carroll’s eternally surreal tale stars Wasikowska in the title role. “There is a lot of pressure,” acknowledges the actress during a brief visit to Beverly Hills from the Portland, Oregon, set of Gus Van Sant’s as-yet-unnamed next film, for which she cropped her long hair to play a death-obsessed teenager in love. “Alice is such a dear character to so many people that you have a responsibility to deliver something that people know but that’s also unique and different. It’s Tim’s Alice. It’s also my Alice.”

According to ABC News, Tim Burton is to head this year’s Cannes film festival jury.

PARIS (Reuters) – U.S. director Tim Burton is to head this year’s Cannes film festival jury, organizers said on Tuesday.

Burton, who made his name with gothic fantasies ranging from “Edward Scissorhands” to “Sleepy Hollow” and “Batman” and whose “Ed Wood” was shown at Cannes in 1995 said he was looking forward to the two-week movie marathon that lay ahead.

“After spending my early life watching triple features and 48-hour horror movie marathons, I’m finally ready for this,” he said in a statement.

“When you think of Cannes you think of world cinema. And as films have always been like dreams to me, this is a dream come true,” he said.

The Cannes film festival runs from May 12-23.
