Tim Burton and Johnny Depp’s newest collaboration, Alice in Wonderland, hits theaters today. Tim usually scores big when he remakes anything, and it is rumored that he is working on revamping the Disney fairy tale Sleeping Beauty as a live-action picture, focusing on the film’s villain, Maleficent.

Best known as the director of Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Sweeney Todd, Tim usually creates dark and quirky-themed movies and loves using Johnny Depp in his films. We picked a few more fairy tales we’d like to see remade by Tim Burton:

The Little Mermaid – The Little Mermaid is a classic Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale about a young mermaid who falls in love with a human and makes a deal with an evil witch to give up her life in the sea and become a human herself. We’d like to see Tim transform Johnny Depp as Sebastian the crab (one of the main characters in the Disney version) and cast Meryl Streep as the sea witch.

Beauty and the Beast – Beauty and the Beast was first published by Madame Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot but was famously recreated by Disney in 1991. The fairy tale is about a beautiful girl who falls in love with a beast only to find out he’s really a prince under a spell.

(CNN) — “Alice in Wonderland” — with its hat-wearing madmen, anxious rabbits and disturbing, smiling cats — would seem to have filmmaker Tim Burton’s name written all over it.

After all, since he started producing and directing films more than 20 years ago, Burton’s name has become synonymous with everything wondrously strange.

Take the delightfully weird world of Roald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” that Burton brought to the screen in 2005 (with, it must be noted, very mixed reviews). Or the extreme spirits of “Beetlejuice.” Or the gleeful aliens of “Mars Attacks!”

While the reviews of “Alice” haven’t been overwhelmingly positive, the expectations have been high.

“He’s one of the few filmmakers left where his movie release is an event,” said Kristian Fraga, filmmaker and author of “Tim Burton: Interviews.”

Alice in Wonderland may not, to the casual observer, seem like a horror film; but take a look at the Lewis Carroll classics on which it’s based – they’re more bizarre, more demented and, yes, more frightening than any number of more obvious candidates. And with Tim Burton helming this sequel/adaptation (due out in theaters next Friday, March 5th, and starring Burton’s favorite leading man Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter) you can be certain you won’t exactly be getting The Care Bears Movie. Last weekend, we hit the Los Angeles press junket for the film, where we heard from the cast — Helena Bonham Carter as The Queen of Hearts, Anne Hathaway as The White Queen, Crispin Glover as The Knave of Hearts, Michael Sheen as the voice of The White Rabbit, and British comedian Matt Lucas as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum (the latter three pictured above, from left to right) — on how they brought Carroll’s whacked-out characters – as filtered through Burton’s unique sensibility – to three-dimensional cinematic life.

“We all had to act opposite tennis balls and bits of tape. But you do that anyway. And actually, tennis balls and bits of tape can be good actors, you know? They’re minimal. There’s a lot to be said for that.”

“It was only two and a half hours [of makeup]. They had to get rid of my hairline so you put a bald cap on and that takes about two and a half hours. And then they have to paint it. And then they put my beauty make-up on. That took some time. And my huge wig. So, yeah. But, you know, they didn’t blow my head up every morning. They did that on camera. I had this one camera – there are two cameras in the world that do this – and they just blow your heads up. That’s all it does. They had this huge camera dedicated to me, which was fine by me.”

She is welcomed as a returning visitor — but is she, in fact, the same Alice who roamed the trippy realm as a child? Time will tell. Here at the Hero Complex, we’re counting down to the film’s March 5 release with daily coverage. Today, Hero contributer Gerrick Kennedy talks to character designer Michael Kutsche.GK: “Alice in Wonderland” was your first experience working on a film. How did you fall into the world of Wonderland and Tim Burton?

MK: It was a huge leap for me because I’m from Germany. I’ve been a pretty successful illustrator but not in the field of movies, and I was doing illustrations for games — like the packaging. Two years ago I put all the work that I did online [because] I never really took good care about making myself public. When you’re working full-time you’re not really thinking about other jobs. One day I was working in my studio in Berlin and I got this e-mail from Sony Imageworks that was like we have this movie project and we found your portfolio would you like to work on a movie? This was a big deal for me.

GK: But you didn’t know you were “auditioning” to work on “Alice in Wonderland’?

HOLLYWOOD — Inarguably one of the greatest director/actor pairings of all time, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are celebrating their 20th anniversary together this year — and doing it with their seventh film, the eagerly anticipated “Alice in Wonderland,” in theaters March 5.

From their beginnings with “Edward Scissorhands” through “Ed Wood,” “The Corpse Bride,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and the rest, they’ve made hundreds of decisions together. From which films to make, to which roles Depp should play, to how he should do any given line-reading, fans have delighted to many of their choices. But when we caught up with the duo on Friday (February 19), we had to mix it up a bit and ask: What is the worst idea either one has ever brought to the other?

“Maybe just any time I’ve called him,” Burton grinned, looking over at his frequent leading man.

“I remember one morning on ‘Sleepy Hollow,’ ” Depp began, referring to the 1999 hit that had him playing Ichabod Crane. “I came in to block a scene, getting a cup of coffee — you’re only half awake. Tim was there, giggling a little bit.
