Johnny Depp And Tim Burton Recall Their Worst Decisions Together
Posted by Cam • No Comments »

HOLLYWOOD — Inarguably one of the greatest director/actor pairings of all time, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are celebrating their 20th anniversary together this year — and doing it with their seventh film, the eagerly anticipated “Alice in Wonderland,” in theaters March 5.

From their beginnings with “Edward Scissorhands” through “Ed Wood,” “The Corpse Bride,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and the rest, they’ve made hundreds of decisions together. From which films to make, to which roles Depp should play, to how he should do any given line-reading, fans have delighted to many of their choices. But when we caught up with the duo on Friday (February 19), we had to mix it up a bit and ask: What is the worst idea either one has ever brought to the other?

“Maybe just any time I’ve called him,” Burton grinned, looking over at his frequent leading man.

“I remember one morning on ‘Sleepy Hollow,’ ” Depp began, referring to the 1999 hit that had him playing Ichabod Crane. “I came in to block a scene, getting a cup of coffee — you’re only half awake. Tim was there, giggling a little bit.

“I’ve been living in England for many, many years and I’m a huge ‘EastEnders’ fan,” said Burton, referring to the soapy (and routinely controversial) drama that has aired on BBC One since 1985. “And Barbara Windsor is just wonderful on it and in so many other things. I’m serious, she’s a national treasure in England.”

“I kept thinking about the twins in ‘The Shining,’ ” Burton said, referring to the chilling Stanley Kubrick horror film that celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. “But really any kind of twins. There’s always something scary about them, in a way. Or there can be.”

Tim Burton won the Winsor McCay Award for the 37th Annual Annie Awards ceremony. Jeffrey Katzenberg and Bruce Timm were also recipients of the prestigious award, which is given to those who have made an impact on the art and industry of animation. ‘Alice in Wonderland’ screenwriter is ready for haters: ‘It’s audacious, what we’ve done’
Posted by Cam • No Comments »

The screenwriter for “Alice In Wonderland” was interviewed by Los Angeles Times

SPOILER ALERT: THIS POST REVEALS PLOT POINTS FROM THE “ALICE IN WONDERLAND” FILM

Geoff Boucher: One of the challenges of adapting Lewis Carroll is the meandering nature of Alice’s adventures, which don’t lend themselves to the imperatives of a feature film. Your story for this “Alice in Wonderland,” though, is very different from the familiar tale. It’s almost a sequel to the classic story, isn’t it?

Linda Woolverton: I wasn’t really thinking of it that way at all, but actually that is exactly what it is. It’s a sequel. First of all, I wasn’t going to try to redo Lewis Carroll and that particular version. And to my mind, it was interesting to ask, “What if Alice was older and she went back?” That was sort of why I engaged this project at all. That idea and the challenge of it.

GB: You must have immersed yourself in the classic and its imagery just to prepare….

Alice illo LW: I did. I read both “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There” and I found that the biggest challenge for me would be tone. I wanted to honor the work, and I felt that to do that, it would be necessary to get the tone just right. It was an enormous challenge for me.

Rare Tim Burton ‘Frankenweenie’ screening at MOMA
Posted by Cam • No Comments »

News Times are reporting that The Museum of Modern Art will be holding a special screening of “Frankenweenie” this Sunday!

The Museum of Modern Art, 11 West 53rd St., is screening films in conjunction with its ongoing Tim Burton exhibit.

Sunday at 2:30 p.m., the museum is presenting a double-bill of “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas” with the director’s bizarre 1984 animated short, “Frankenweenie,” which first brought him to the attention of Hollywood movie executives. The movie scared the executives at Disney which funded it and became a legend as the studio refused to screen it. Years later, they proudly released it on video.

“Frankenweenie” combines animation with live actors including the late great Joseph Maher, who lived in Fairfield for many years.

Film free with $20 MOMA admission.

For more information, go to www.moma.org.
