A look back at the classic 1931 Alice in Wonderland film
Posted by Cam • No Comments »

To bone up for this Friday’s release of Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” I figured it would be a good idea to do a little research on previous film versions and the source material. As a boy, I didn’t have much contact with the original book by Lewis Carroll, so I felt I needed some education.

I’m glad I did.

First of all, I hadn’t realized that Lewis Carroll was a pseudonym for Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who reputedly came up with the basis for the story while on a boat trip with a friend and his three daughters.

The other thing I didn’t know is that there was more than one book. The 1865 “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” was followed seven years later by “Through the Looking-Glass.” In the many film adaptations, characters and story elements from both books are usually mashed up together. This isn’t as hard as it sounds, since the novels were part of the literary nonsense movement that loved to play around with reality and perceptions.

Here a sample of Danny Elfman’s composed piece for Alice in Wonderland. To me it has the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory/Edward Scissorhands vibe to it. Still amazing piece! Less than 2 days! :o

Mia on Sunday Magazine

Once again the lovely Mia Wasikowska has been featured on the cover of a magazine.
normal_001

Between acting jobs she returns to the family home in Canberra: “I still have the same room I’ve had my whole life”

To land the role of Alice, she had to fly to London three times in as many weeks, she said: “I had no body clock and was starting to feel delirious”

Girl most likely, why she think she’s succeeded where so many others have failed: “It’s such a random thing, right time, right place, luck, yes and a lot of hard work as well, I don’t know, it’s a mysterious industry.”

Comparisons to her namesake Mia Farrow and cutting off her hair: “I was happy to cut it off, I’m sure people would have liked me to keep it in its Alice state, but I’ve had hair down to here for the past two years” she says, pointing to her waist. “It’s great not to have to do anything with it in the morning and I was also happy to donate it to Locks of Love who make wigs for kids (who’ve lost hair through illness).”

Being the Red Queen

Helena Bonham Carter looks back when she was first introduced to Wonderland and being asked to play the Red Queen.

“He was so polite about it, and there were so many hesitations,” Bonham Carter said. “He said, ‘Would you consider, um, possibly, perhaps — but only if you want to — um, anyway, would you play the Red Queen?’”
“It was like a proposal of marriage,” said the 43-year-old actress. Bonham is routinely misidentified as Burton’s wife. They have two children and have had a nine-year romance together.
